The Cave-to-Concentrate project was undertaken by BRS for a major Cu-Au operation. The main focus of the project was to determine how changes to cave fragmentation may affect throughput, energy intensity and ultimately gold and copper production.

To this end, BRS developed an industry-first Cave-to-Concentrate system model has been developed to address these specific objectives. The model includes many features never previously incorporated in such tools, such as block cave draw point schedules, cave fragmentation variability, ore blending, plant operating and control logic, and automated constraint identification.

Using this structured and comprehensive approach it has been possible to investigate a range of future states as a basis for forward planning and investment decisions.

Simulation and modelling techniques as illustrated by the Cave-to-Concentrate work is also an integral part of the BRS Rock-to-Revenue (R2R) methodology to address operational effectiveness.
